First aid certificate extensions

The current Covid-19 outbreak has meant that providers of first aid courses, including those provided by St John Ambulance, have been temporarily suspended. Further information can be found at https://www.sja.org.uk/course-information/covid-19/

During this period the HSE has recently announced that existing certificates (due for renewal on or after 16th March 2020) may qualify for a 3 month extension provided you are able to explain why you have not been able to requalify and demonstrate what steps you have taken to access the training. This applies to holders of the following certifications:

  • First Aid at Work (FAW)
  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
  • Offshore Medic (OM)
  • Offshore First Aid (OFA)

Full details of this extension can be found at https://www.hse.gov.uk/news/first-aid-certificate-coronavirus.htm

For businesses operating during the current outbreak it is important that first aid needs continue to be assessed to ensure that:

  1. sufficient cover can be provided for workers that are present and
  2. that it is appropriate for the activities being undertaken (this is particularly important for those that undertake higher risk activities)

Whilst businesses may find that first aid cover is reduced due to factors outside their control there are things that can be done to ensure that they still comply with the law. Details can be found via the HSE link provided above.
