What Does Driving Tuition Insurance Cover?
Our insurance policies for driving instructors can include:
- Driving Instructor Motor Insurance – Specialist motor cover designed specifically for driving tuition. This includes comprehensive cover, third-party liability, fire and theft protection whilst you're teaching learner drivers. Standard car insurance doesn't cover teaching, making this essential for all ADIs. The policy covers you and your pupils during lessons, including nervous or inexperienced drivers.
- Public Liability Insurance – Covers injury or property damage claims from third parties, such as pupils, parents, or members of the public. For example, if a pupil is injured getting into or out of your vehicle, or if someone is hurt during a lesson stop, this cover protects you against compensation claims and legal costs
- Employers’ Liability –Covers legal costs and compensation if an employee is injured or falls ill
- Tools Cover —Covers your professional equipment such as dual controls, in-car cameras, theory training materials, and business technology against theft, damage, or loss.
- Personal Accident Cover —Provides financial support if you're injured or unable to work due to illness or accident. As a self-employed instructor, losing your ability to teach means losing your income. This cover provides replacement income whilst you recover, protecting your financial stability.
- Legal Expenses Insurance – Covers legal fees associated with business disputes, contract disagreements, employment issues (if you employ other instructors), or regulatory investigations by the DVSA.
- Courtesy Car – Provides a replacement vehicle whilst your tuition car is being repaired following an accident or breakdown, ensuring you can continue teaching and earning.
- Professional Indemnity Insurance —Protects your business against claims of professional negligence, errors, or omissions in your teaching. For example, if a pupil alleges your poor instruction led to them failing their test multiple times or being involved in an accident, this cover pays for legal defence and compensation.
Our team can help you identify the right combination of cover for your specific needs.

FAQs
Do driving instructors need special insurance?
Yes, driving instructors must have specialist motor insurance designed specifically for driving tuition. Standard car insurance policies do not cover teaching learner drivers, and driving without appropriate cover invalidates your insurance and could result in prosecution. Specialist driving instructor insurance covers you and your pupils during lessons, including accidents caused by inexperienced drivers.
What's the difference between ADI insurance and standard car insurance?
Standard car insurance excludes teaching and business use with learner drivers. Driving instructor insurance is specifically designed to cover the unique risks of teaching, including accidents caused by pupils, multiple drivers using your vehicle, and higher mileage. It also typically includes business use, allowing you to use your vehicle for non-teaching purposes as well.
What happens if a pupil has an accident during a lesson?
Your specialist driving instructor motor insurance covers accidents that occur during lessons, even if caused by your pupil. The policy protects both you and the learner driver, covering damage to your vehicle, third-party vehicles, and any injuries. This is why specialist cover is essential – standard insurance wouldn't respond to such claims.
Can I get insurance if I'm a trainee driving instructor (PDI)?
Yes, we can arrange insurance for trainee instructors holding a trainee licence (pink badge). PDI insurance is similar to qualified ADI cover but reflects your trainee status. Once you qualify, we can seamlessly transition you to full ADI insurance.
