Shaping Risk: Welcoming Simon Broome as Director of Risk Engineering

We caught up with Simon to learn about how he has settled into the role and to find out his plans for risk engineering within PIB.

Simon Broom

Simon recently joined PIB as our new Director of Risk Engineering bringing over 25 years’ experience across insurance, risk management, health and safety and operational leadership. Simon’s career has spanned engineering, business management and leading regional risk management teams within the insurance sector, focusing on helping businesses understand and manage risk in a practical, commercial way.

We caught up with Simon to learn about how he has settled into the role and to find out his plans for risk engineering within PIB.

Why PIB?

The opportunity to help shape and grow a market leading risk engineering proposition in a business that is investing in specialist expertise and embracing innovation was a strong attraction. The chance to work for a company that is growing, ambitious and genuinely puts clients at the centre of what it does made the move particularly appealing.

Tell us more about your role

As Director of Risk Engineering, my role is to lead and develop PIB’s risk engineering capability across the business. The team works closely with our broking colleagues, insurers and clients to identify, assess and reduce risk, helping businesses become safer, more resilient and ultimately more attractive to insurers.

We support colleagues across PIB, by providing technical expertise, adding value to client relationships and helping to differentiate our proposition in an increasingly competitive market.

First impressions of PIB

From day one, the welcome has stood out. Being asked to speak on stage at the PIB Expo on the second day in the business was certainly a memorable introduction “thrown in at the deep end”, but in the best possible way.

The Expo also underlined the culture here. There is a real passion for collaboration, a willingness to share knowledge across different business units and specialisms, and a strong sense of energy around our future growth. The entrepreneurial mindset and openness to new ideas is clear.

What are your goals and ambitions?

A key goal is to continue to develop PIB as a market-leading risk engineering service that consistently delivers value for both clients and broking teams, with a clear focus on winning and retaining business across the group.

I am keen to embrace new technology such as AI to enhance how risk engineering is delivered, while continuing to build a technically excellent team that offers outstanding customer service.

What drives you to succeed

What really drives me is making a positive difference, I’m often described as being a “fixer of things”, which probably stems from having an engineering background. The reward for me is helping clients prevent a significant loss by providing practical solutions that improve claims defensibility, encouraging them to think differently, or by developing new ways of working.

I enjoy building strong relationships and watching people and teams grow and succeed together, with collaboration being the key to success.

Your hopes for the industry

I would like to see the insurance industry continue to move towards a more proactive approach to risk engineering and risk management, rather than simply reacting when losses occur.

Technology, data and innovation will all be crucial, but there will also remain a vital role for experienced professionals who can blend technical expertise with practical advice and strong client relationships.

A message to clients

The message is simple : risk engineering at PIB is here to help you. It’s not just about surveys and reports; it’s about supporting you, providing solutions that reduce risk to your business.
